The GE was already down in the basement when a couple bought a Wisconsin house about 30 years ago, and it never quit on them. When they downsized, one of their kids drove a 2,100-mile round trip to pick up a few things and came home to New Hampshire with the fridge. Then it got the same bodywork you'd give a car door. Sand out the rust and dents, fill the low spots with Bondo, sand it again, Rust-Oleum primer, white enamel, a couple of clear coats over the top. It went into the new kitchen and got stocked. The owner's manual made the trip too. About half of it covers upkeep. The other half is recipes.

The recipe half runs from frozen desserts to canapes and beverages.
