Made it through two apartment fires, three weeks apart

Two fires in the same apartment complex, about three weeks apart, both from bad wiring in the ceiling setting the insulation alight. After the first, the tenants were moved to another unit and told to grab what they could in one trip. Then the first apartment burned again. The complex decided these two were bad luck and let them out of the lease. The alarm clock came through both, and nobody gave its age a thought until a power outage finally killed its original 9-volt backup battery and it reset itself to 1998. Tick on, you old so-and-so.
