    Mercurochrome, the red mercury antiseptic, sold in US drugstores

    On Oct 19, 1998, the FDA moved it from 'generally recognized as safe' to 'untested,' which ended US sales. A mercury-free product called Mercuroclear trades on the name.

  2. Since 1946

    A seagoing paddle steamer

    Still going

    Waverley is the world's last seagoing passenger paddle steamer, and her 2026 season runs until October 18. Preservationists bought her in 1974 for one pound.

  3. Since 1881

    A giant sequoia with a tunnel cut through it, in California

    Done for 2017

    The Pioneer Cabin Tree came down in a storm on January 8, 2017. Its tunnel was cut in 1881, and cars drove through it starting in the 1920s.

    Tab, Coca-Cola's first diet soda

    Coca-Cola discontinued Tab on December 31, 2020. It was the best-selling diet soda in 1982, before Diet Coke took over.

    A Bavarian state brewery near Munich

    Still brewing, about 45 million liters in 2023. Its 1040 founding charter is thought to be a forgery, written by an abbot sometime between 1616 and 1640.
